Hi Audiosoil

As far as I can understand this is how it's "supposed" to work:

Good, experienced drivers are placed in a competitive market, paying premiums that are comparable to other western provinces. They represent approximately 80 per cent of the Alberta market.

The other 20 per cent of drivers have premiums regulated by a new rate grid. These will be new and less experienced drivers, and drivers with poor driving records.

Compulsory insurance rates have been rolled back a minimum of five per cent, and rebates or reduced monthly payments will apply to the remainder of policies from October 1, 2004, to the end of each policy.

The new premium grid sets maximum premiums for compulsory auto insurance — personal liability and property damage, or PL/PD, and

The premium grid starts at an entry level that is significantly lower than current market rates for less-experienced drivers, and set discounts for drivers with clean records and surcharges for drivers with at-fault claims and traffic violations.

Each claim-free year will lower premiums by moving drivers down the grid until after 10 years they reach the 50 per cent discount.

Drivers on the grid with more than 10 years of clean driving pay a maximum premium that is 50 per cent less than the entry-level rate.

After 15 years of experience, one at-fault claim will not push the driver's premium above the lowest price of the grid.

Rates for occasional drivers with less than 8 years of experience are capped at 25% of the grid rate they would pay if they were the primary driver. There will be no charge for an occasional driver with 8 or more years of experience.

Both grid premiums and maximum market premiums are initially set by government, then by a new Auto Insurance Rate Board that will include representatives from consumers.

Insurance companies are required to file their optional coverage rates with the government, so that these rates can be monitored to protect consumers.

A new three-level process has been established to resolve consumer concerns with their premiums:

As I said this is how it's supposed to work. I would say the best thing you could do is talk to your insurance agent.

Make sure you phone around as well!!!  You will get very different quotes from all of the insurers.  Your registration and drivers licenses come from the same place ( The Registry)  and your insurance comes from the insurance company.  You might want to have an abstract & an insurance history handy as well, that could help lower your premium.  They'll rip you off anyway they can here.

Registration is just under $70 bucks for a small 4 door car.  I don't know if this changes for bigger vehicles with bigger engines.

yes, you get your license plate - your stickers are good for a year.  You renew during the month before your birthday.  You'll also have to switch over your driver's license as well.  That's good for 5 years.

Hi,

You don't actually renew in the month before your Birthday - the renewal date is based on the letter your last name starts with.

It is yearly though.

So what does car insurance actually cost?  Well if you are an experienced driver with a good record and you don't want all the frills of collision insurance (ie: just public liability) - it should cost you around $50 dollars a month.

If you aren't so experienced or you are under 25, but you have driver training (bring proof if you did attend driver training), then you are probably looking at about double the above rate for public liability - or more.

There are numerous insurance agencies here, it is a private purchase and you can't register your car without your insurance slip.  Why not try an online quote at someplace like TD - https://www.tdcanadatrust.com/tdinsurance/auto/quote.jsp - quotes cost nothing, but like someone else mentioned, rates do vary and calling around can save you on your montly premiums.

The AB Government website gives details of what insurance is mandatory for your vehicle in AB - http://www.autoinsurance.gov.ab.ca/coverage.html#1

Also, the law was changed in Alberta in July regarding who is considered a 'resident' and who isn't - which determines whether or not you need to register your out of province vehicle or whether you can keep your our of province license/registration.

Insurance (auto) is a WHOLE lot better in Ab than in BC. I pay about 740 a year, and haven't had a ticket since 1986. I haven't had a fault accident in my whole life. In Alberta, I'd pay maybe 550 for the same coverage.

Get a copy of your driver's abstract. Just walk into any General Insurance Agency, and you can be insured that same hour.

You won't miss dealing with ICBC, not one bit
